How did the 2006 reunion come about?
The base guitar player, Jaap Los, had always talked with great delight to his
wife and children about his teenage years in the band. Therefore, his wife and kids
approached the other band members in October 2005 about whether they would attend Jaap's
60th surprise birthday party and play together once more. All the "old"
members were enthused by the idea and prepared for the big day.
How long ago had the band members seen each other?
Most band members had not seen or spoken to each other for more than 30 years before this
reunion. They all live in close distance from each other in Holland, except for Willem,
who lives in Florida. They reacquainted by email and telephone and agreed on the music and
songs they were going to perform. Then they practiced individually at home and only had
one very brief rehearsal together on the actual day of the surprise party.
Tell me about the Surprise Party
Jaap thought that he was going to a party for a friend. All of his siblings
(except his sister Marianne in Israel) and his closest friends were there, some 80 people
in total. The Magics band members and their set up were hidden behind a
curtain.
When Jaap and his wife Wil came in, everybody shouted: "Surprise" and then sang the Dutch version of "Happy Birthday." That opened Jaap's eyes. The party was for him. He was toasted with champagne. After Jaap made the rounds and met everybody, his son Leo took the stage and gave Jaap a present and then introduced..... The Magics. As the curtain opened the "old" band played. Jaap relished.

Jaap loves complex guitar music, as well as the later Beatles. His daughter Annette wanted to surprise her dad by singing Blackbird (by The Beatles), accompanied on the guitar by Willem. Click on the pic on the right to start the video. Photo on the far right: Jaap doesn't know what hits him. His daughter sings specially for him. He is overcome with emotions.
